Der heutige Marktplatz der Stadt Weimar, das Zentrum der Stadt, wurde 1554 das erste Malgepflastert, erhielt 1564 seinen Brunnen und bald saumten ihn Renaissancebauten.

1696年2月17日が書面で裏付けられたエレファントホテルの開業日である。開業に際し、公から祝辞が届いている。「この地方を旅する貴人へじゅうぶんな安寧や急速を提供するのがこの王都の懸案でした。ただ広いだけの宿屋なら既にあるけども、商取引や旅で我が町を訪れる人々へ食事を提供し、ひいてはこの町の経済発展を助けるような宿は不足していた。（中略）私は今日ここに、「エレファント」の設立許可を与えます。」
