Helis Colt Established as Futurity Favorite

W H's flashy 2YO colt, Cosmic Bomb, rated among the nation's leading juveniles, yesterday established himself as the horse to beat in the $80000 Arlington Furutiry next Saturday.


The dark brown son of PharamondII, ridden by Shelby Clark, scored a two length victory in the $3500 Annapolis purse, a 5.5F tuneup for the big juvenille event which has 165 throughred still eligible.


It was CB second consecutive triumph at Arlington Park and it was scored in impressive fashion iver W.M.Peavey's Jett-Jett, which beat Fred W.Hooper's Gablestown by two length.

Dixiana's Big Casino, second choice at 2-1 , was fifth behind Mrs.Karl Masterson's Chicalmo in a 6 horse rase.

Cosmic Bomb , owned by William Helis of New Orleans, bred by Mrs.John D.Hertz, the former Chicagoan who operates the Stoner Creek Stud in Kentucky, and ridden by Shelby Clark, the McLeansboro lad who has a way with horses, aped to a stirring three-quater length upset triumph in the 17th running of the $80775 Arlington F yesterday at Arlington Park.


the royally bred son of Pharamon II Banish Fear, which cost the Louisiana and New York sportsman $29500 as a yearling last year, engaged Maine Chance farm's more expensive Jet Pilot in a stretch duel that left the crowd of 30000 hoarse and spent as they passed under the wire in front of 13 others of the nation's best juvenile colts and geldeings.

Milkwagonjoe finishes 4th.


Clark had brought the Helis color bearer from far back in the back stretch of the 6f race to second at the strech turn as Jet Pilot, under a rousing ride by Johnny Adams, held a lenght lead and Mrs.Fred W.Hooper's Education and William Veeneman's Twqeet's Boy finished second and Cosmic Bomb third, came up fast on the outside to take the show from Louis Schlosser's Milkwagonjoe by a nose.

前半は全馬が一団ですすみ、ゴールではCBと激しい競り合いになり、ゴールライン入線の時点では両馬は2インチも差がなかった。

but then objection sign was lighted , and after a brief delay Cosmic Bomb's number came down out of the No.2 position.The crowd was puzzled till the anouncer told what happened.

Near the finish line Shelby Clark, riding the second-choice Cosmic Bomb along the trail and seeing victory about to elude him, reached over in desperation and grabbed Blue Border's saddle cloth.
But Myron D.Davis up in the patrol judge's stand just in front of the wire, saw what had happened.
The officials promptly took action.
Clark was suspended immediately and his case refered to the stewards of the Jockey Club.
So second money of $6000, instead of going to Helis, went to Mrs.Isabel Dodge Sloane, whose Brookmeade colors were carried by Grand Admiral.
Cosmic Bomb were most brisk coming out of the gate.
But going to the turn he went to the fore.
CB was in closest pursuit and for the rest of the way the race was between them.
at quater pole Blue Border had half a length advantage.
Clark brought CB up on the inside, and down the straightwa the two piunded side by side.
Then came the action that brought CB number down.

僅差でゴールしたが、入線後に審議になった。結果、ゴール前の審判席の眼の前で、CBの騎手クラークがBBのsaddle clothsをつかんでいたことがわかり、CBは失格になった。

Eighty-five colts and a nearrecord total of ten fillies have been named for this year's seventy-ninth running of the $100,000 added Belmont Stakes, it was announced yesterday by the Westchester Racing Association.

the Derby winter book choice, CB will leave for Louiville Monday, even tho he finished 6th Phalanx's half of the Wood. This was the first start of the year for CB.

He appeared to be somewhat lame coming back to unsaddling enclosure, but from his stable later came word that it was nothing serious.

LOUISVILLE, April 30 — The rain sifted down gently from the leaden skies this morning in a steady drizzle, but the Churchill Downs track still was in excellent shape as most of the Derby horses went out for a spin on the oval, where one of them is destined to get fame, glory and a large chunk of folding money on Saturday.

in the next barn a stable hand was walking Phalanx, the favorite, who'd just finished working a mile in 1:45.

I had a most interesting talk with John Gaver.

'I thought it eliminated Cosmic Bomb and Double Jay as contenders' he said frankly, ' and I still think Jet Pilot and On Trust are the colts to beat.'
