3代グラフトン公とその子4代グラフトン公は、競馬とサラブレッド生産史における最大級の功労者の一人と評されている。父子は広大な領地で競走馬生産に執念を燃やし、自家生産馬を走らせた。

3代グラフトン公は、馬主としてダービー3勝、オークス2勝をあげた。

馬主としてのグラフトン公の最も有名なレースの一つに、ヘロドとのマッチレースがある。

1764年に、グラフトン公は自家生産馬アンティノウス（Antinous）で、カンバーランド公のヘロドに500ギニー（525ポンド相当）を賭けて1対1の勝負を挑んだ。この対戦の観戦者たちによる賭けの総額は10万ポンドに達した。翌年、グラフトン公は1000ポンドを賭けたリターンマッチを申し込んだが、再び敗戦した。

当時はまだ競馬規則は未整備の時代で、多くの馬主、調教師、厩務員、騎手たちは賭けで儲けるために当たり前のように不正行為をしていた（競走馬の能力を故意に発揮させないなどの「いんちき」は「不正」とはみなされていなかった。）。しかしグラフトン公は当時もっとも有名な馬主・生産者の一人であったが、そうしたインチキ行為に与しなかったので、当時から稀有なホースマンとみなされていた。

1774年当時、グラフトン公はノーサンプトン州のWakefield Lodgeやサフォーク州ユーストンのユーストン・ホールといった広大な領地からのあがりだけで年9,000ポンドの収入があり、これに官職等の収入を加えると、年収は18,000ポンドに達した。グラフトン公はこの富をユーストン・ホールの邸宅整備や競走馬生産に費やした。

by the time Charles' great-great-grandson, Augustus Henry, the 3rd Duke of Grafton, reached middle age, his annual income due to these pensions had swollen to £9,000 a year, and other sinecures brought his total yearly income to £18,000, a true fortune in 1774.

The Racing

• one of the most curious of English eccentrics,
• one of the most successful owner-breeders of throughbreds for a much longer period.
• neither he nor his son the 4th Duke believed in challenging for teh ST.Leger, and he had little chance of winning either 2000 Guineas or the 1000 Guineas , as the former was founded onlt two years before his death, the latter not until 1814.

• As far as the Turf was concerned, his eccentricity was demonstrated by his order for the planting of an avenue of trees from his park at Euston in Nofolk to Newmarket, 18 mi away, so that he could drive to the race over the grass.
• The avenue had to stop 6mi short of its objective, becaouse the Duke had overlooked the fact that it would have to pass over somebody else's land.

PromiseはPrunella（父ハイフライヤー、英CS）を産んだ。

英CSを累代配合されたPrunellaは輝かしい牝馬となり、11頭の一級馬をうんだ。これらの馬の名はみんな頭文字が「P」で始まる。PelisseやPopeもその一例。

Prunellaの牝駒、Penelopeは18勝を挙げ、繁殖牝馬としても活躍した。その産駒にはWhaleboneとWhiskerがいる。さらにWebもいる。WebはLord Jerseyに売却され、その牧場の基礎牝馬として大成功した。

首相在任時、官邸を放り出してニューマーケットに行った。「競馬があるから明日の夜まで戻らないよ」と２回手紙を送り、官邸を空転させた。

When the cabinet was to assemble for dinner at Lord Shelburne's London house he sent a message to say that he could not be in town until late in the evening as he was matching a horse at Newmarket in the morning .

Harshest of all the critics of the Duke of Grafton was the anonymous political comentator Junius.

The private life of the Duke was hardly ane more edifying than his public.

Even robust Georgirian England was scandalised by his taking his lovely mistress Nancy Parsons to the races at Newmarket and to the theatre.

• Very early in his assocation with Newmarket the Duke of Grafton made one of the most celebrated matches ever staged on the Heath.

For 1000£ a side he ran his horse ANtinous against the Duke of Cumberaland's Herod iver the Beacon COurse in 1764.

So heavy was the betting that something like 100,000 is reupted to have been dependent upon the outcome and after a desperate race the verdict of a short neck was awarded to Herod , whose male line is mainteained by Blakeney and Julio Mariner.

The year before he matched Antinous against Herod, the Duke of Grafton founded the great stud at his Nofolk home, Euston Hall, by the purchace of the seven-y-o mare Julia, whose sire Blank was by the Darley Arabian.

In order to be able to drive the 18 miles from Euston Hall to Newmarkt over grass the third Duke of Grafton gave order for the plantation of an avenue through which his carriage could pass.

Unfortunately he forgot that he did not own the land over which the last six miles should have run, so that this arboreal ornament to the East Anglian countryside came to an abrupt end after twelve miles.
