1200ギニー（1200gs）はニューマーケット競馬場の春季第一開催の2日目（火曜日）に施行。「登録料100ギニーのステークス戦」なのだが、1772年にリニューアルし、「1200ギニー」と俗称されるようになった。
5歳以上（現在の数え方では6歳）の古馬による長距離戦で、現在は廃止されたニューマーケット競馬場の周回コース（3マイル6ハロン93ヤード、約6120メートル）で9ストーン（57.2kg）の定量で行う。
